Bikavér is Hungary’s historically important traditional wine. An elegant and complex blend with rich spiciness and beautiful balance. By law, Szekszárdi Bikavér must be made from at least four grape varieties. A minimum of 45% Kékfrankos and 5% Kadarka, with a maximum of 40% Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Kadarka is a speciality of Szekszárdi Bikavér, which distinguishes it from its Eger counterparts. A maximum of 10% Syrah may be added to the blend for the premium category, and Alibernet, Bíborkadarka, Blauburger, Malbec, Menoire, Mészikadar, Pinot Noir, Portugieser, Sagrantino, Syrah, Tannat, Turán, Virághegyi and Zweigelt for the basic Bikavér. Szekszárdi Bikavér must be matured in barrels for at least one year in all quality categories, but according to the regulations of the wine region, the Bikavér must not have distinctive barrique notes.
